Not your typical Snappy-Snack: Balut in Carmen

Asia is the largest continent of all, it presents wide range of diversified philosophies, religion, culture and tradition.

The Pearl of Orient Seas, the Philippines, is one of the home of varied delicacies that are either way unique and exotic that are based on the ethnicity of the country.

Balut, an exotic yet delicious kind of delicacy that are prevalent on every streets in the Philippines. It is named after the Filipino term which means “wrapped“. Balut are made from duck eggs that undergone fertilization that becomes a bird embryo, boiled and eaten.

A sixteen days balut

They say, if you’re a foreigner and you haven’t tried to eat balut, your ‘staycation‘ here in the Philippines is incomplete.

Pateros, the smallest town in Metro Manila is the “home of Balut” in the country. It has been said that the balut there are very delicious, also the making of balut is the residents’ primary source of income and their skills are passed by generation after generation.

In the province of the Davao del Norte, the Municipal of Carmen became the new home of Balut in Davao region. According to the Municipal Tourism Officer Romulo Sambajon, because of the constant flooding occurence in the municipality, itik (duck) growers are forced to sell balut from itik eggs due to the increasing supply of duck eggs. This proved to be a smart move for the itik growers, who used to supply balut to various areas in the region, as their income doubled since they now sell their products directly to the consumers.
The local government later then set up areas for selling in Lagpan Purok 1 in Barangay Ising and in Barangay Tuganay with the assistance of national government agencies, such Department of Labor and Employment and the Department of Agriculture.

Both Balutan sa Carmen is located conveniently along the National Highway, and is open 24/7.

Thanks to the Balutan sa Carmen, the economic activity of the municipality isn’t the only one that augments but as well as the arrival of visitors in town.
